Hi there! My name is Stephen, I’m 23 and studying museum studies at NYU, and go by the stage name of Martyr (pronounced “mar-TEAR”). I took this name after coming forward and recognizing my own sexual assault, during which process I was rejected and called a “martyr” by the person I told. Now I incorporate aspects of drag, performance art, and art history into my performances to explore the concepts of gender, queer loneliness and sadness, and the reclamation of power. My performances are almost always emotionally charged, with maybe some humor thrown in for good measure. While I consider myself more of a performer than a makeup artist, my skills have improved significantly since moving to Brooklyn this past august, with one of my trademarks being a hypermasculine painted on beard. I have aspirations of eventually performing in galleries and museums, but i think the place to start is getting recognized in Brooklyn!
